Joona Hirvinen: Emerging Talent in Disc Golf
I am Joona Hirvinen, a 17-year-old high school student living in Kokkola.
I began playing disc golf as a young child when my dad brought home a three-disc starter set from a trip, and we went to test them out in the park across the street. I started competing in weekly competitions at the end of 2020, and I participated in my first PDGA tournaments in 2021. In 2022, I began competing seriously, and my former main sport, orienteering, had to be set aside as I didn’t have time to seriously pursue two sports.
At the beginning of the last season, I started strong by winning four out of the first six PDGA tournaments of the season. However, I wouldn’t classify these victories as very significant since they were qualification tournaments for the national championship and a couple of local PDGA events, so my major achievements have been somewhat limited. I would say my best achievement might be my PDGA rating, which in one update last season jumped to 986, indicating consistency in my play.
My short-term goals are to succeed at a national level in major tournaments, play consistently, and win a somewhat larger tournament. I want to make a career out of disc golf and win tournaments worldwide. A big dream of mine is to someday win a World Championship gold.
It’s hard to choose a favorite disc, but I would say the Buzzz and Destroyer are quite strong contenders.
If I had to name a secret talent, let’s just say it’s hard to find a sport in which I am really bad.
My motto is, and will always be, “practice makes perfect.”
